FOCAL CARTILAGE REPAIR

Cartilage repair

A focal defect in the knee’s joint surface is not the same as widespread arthritis. Selected defects can be treated with repair techniques chosen after imaging and arthroscopy.

Cartilage repair
01

A defect, not a worn-out joint

Cartilage repair is aimed at a localised lesion — a defined area of damage — while the rest of the knee is still in reasonable condition. Size, depth and location of the defect, and the alignment of the limb, all matter.

02

Techniques matched to the lesion

Options discussed after assessment can include marrow stimulation to encourage a repair surface, and cartilage restoration procedures for suitable defects. The choice depends on your age, activity and what is seen inside the joint. It is not one operation for every painful knee.

03

Often part of a wider plan

A cartilage procedure may be combined with meniscal repair or treatment of alignment, because an unprotected defect tends to fail. Rehabilitation is slower than a simple trim, and sport returns in stages.

04

When replacement is the clearer path

A knee worn in more than one compartment is usually not a cartilage-repair candidate. Partial or total knee replacement, including robotic-assisted replacement, may then be the more reliable way back to walking without pain.
