International training. Local understanding.
In 2017, Dr. Tan completed an orthopaedic fellowship under Professor Ross Crawford in Brisbane, Australia. His training focused on robotic-assisted joint replacement, primary and revision hip and knee reconstruction, complex hip reconstruction and peri-prosthetic fracture fixation.
He is trained in robotic and computer-navigated techniques for hip and knee replacement, including partial knee replacement, and the direct anterior approach to total hip replacement. The use of any technique is guided by an individual assessment of each patient’s needs.
A commitment to recovery, beyond surgery
Before joining SSOC, Dr. Tan was Head of the Adult Reconstruction / Joint Replacement Unit and a Senior Consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He served as Clinical Champion for the hospital’s Knee Replacement Clinical Pathway and Clinical Lead for its Enhanced Recovery After Surgery knee replacement programme.
In 2019, a Ministry of Health HMDP Scholarship supported further training in Scotland and the United Kingdom. His work in enhanced recovery reflects an interest in the whole patient journey — preparation, treatment, rehabilitation and return to daily life.
Teaching the next generation
Alongside clinical practice, Dr. Tan was the previous Chair of the Singapore Arthroplasty Society, and a board member of the Arthroplasty Society in ASIA (ASIA). He is an active examiner for medical school exams and the Master of Medicine (Orthopaedic).
